All daytime ESL level 2 -4 students are registered and required to attend the ESL lab class. Evening ESL students are also registered to attend.

When does this class begin?

Class begins the second week of the quarter and ends on the last day of instruction. This is a drop in class, so you can come anytime we are open.

How often do I need to attend?

You need to complete 16 hours to PASS the lab class.

What should I do if I cannot attend the lab class?

You are required to attend the lab class. If you have a problem that makes it difficult for you to attend, you must talk to the lab instructor as soon as possible. We can give you 8 hours of “homework” to complete and turn in. You will still need to attend 8 hours in the lab.

What will I do when I come to the lab?

The lab class is to help you improve your English and provide support for your ESL classes. When you come to the lab, bring your homework and let a teacher or tutor work with you. You can borrow from our many resources — textbooks, dictionaries, CDs, DVDs, movies, readers, games. You can use a computer. You can practice your English using our website. Also, you can attend one of the many mini-lessons, small group activities, and workshops.

How can I attend a workshop?

Every week, we will post a sign up sheet for the upcoming workshops. You need to sign up before the workshop to attend. Only sign up for one workshop each week. Remember to come on time. The door will be locked at the start of the workshop and you will not be allowed to enter.

How can tutors help me improve my English?

Tutors can help you with anything you are working on in your ESL classes. Bring your homework in to class. Also, bring your teacher’s instruction for the assignment. The tutor will help you complete the assignment. He or she will not provide you with the answers, however. They will help you understand the information.

Can I attend more than 16 hours?

Yes, you can. However, remember you will attend the ESL lab every quarter while you are studying in level 2 – 4.

I have a computer at home. Can I just work on my own computer?

This is not a computer class. This is a English lab. When you come to the class, you will receive help to improve your reading, writing, speaking, listening, and technology skills. If you would like to work half of your lab hours from home, you can. Just talk with a lab instructor no later than week 5 about doing part of your lab hours from home. He or she will provide you with some “lab homework.” You will need to complete this homework and return it before the end of the quarter. You will still need to complete 8 hours in the lab.

What happens if I don’t attend the lab class?

This is an ESL class. If you do not attend, you will fail the class. You could also receive a “V” grade.
